I love a good Idiom

Sorry I missed yesterday's post. When I got home from work I was feeling a bit under the weather. I ended up on the couch watching Shrek 2 and giggling along most of the night. Ryno always humors me with my animated movie obsession. I am a sucker for a funny animated movie. I especially love the ones like Shrek and the Toy Story series, because they add in humor just for the adults.

Something I thought of while writing the above is how much I enjoy a good idiom. I find them fascinating. I used under the weather, and it reminded me of how I spent a few summer nights in college hanging out with friends and looking up the meanings behind every idiom and phrase we could find. The history behind coined phrases or idioms is so interesting to me. For example, under the weather is thought to have come from a time when sailors would be sent below the ship's deck to fight off an illness, which would put them under the literal weather happening on the ship's deck. I felt pretty inspired to look for a great idiom source today, and The Phrase Finder was the best that I came across. Another idiom I have always loved is the bee's knees, which according the The Phrase Finder became popular during the 1920's among flappers. Apparently, their love for creating phrases from nonsense or rhyming words also spurned the phrase the cat's whiskers.

Gregory Alan Isakov

I found this weeks's music pick through one of my Pandora channels. Everything of his I have heard on Pandora I absolutely love. I also love the album artwork for his newest album, This Empty Northern Hemisphere. However, the song I am sharing today is from his 2007 album That Sea, The Gambler and the song is Stable Song. He is an indie folk rock artist from Boulder, Colorado, and you can listen to more of his songs on his site here. Also, I love this interview with Isakov from The Aspen Times. He is quoted saying how he is attracted to sad songs, which I completely get. I love a good sad song; for some reason I just can't resist them!

I hope you all enjoy Stable Song! Have a wonderful weekend!

fireflies

I just returned from a delicious dinner at Trudy's with one of our friends we met through the Boston Terrier play group. Elton has been dearly missing her boston named Honey. With temperatures in the 100s it's been hard to get them together, but we are planning to set a play date soon.

In the meantime Elton is staying entertained by pawing a June Bug on the outside of the window. While I am kind of a wimp when it comes to bugs, one of my favorite past-times is watching fireflies float around the yard. I find there are few things that represent the carefreeness of summer more than flickering lights of fireflies.

five things

Today I compiled a list of my top five things I would like to accomplish this weekend. As it happens they are all things I am really loving right now.

1. I would love to catch a great bluegrass show with some amazing banjo playing.
2. Build a little stair-stepping, bleacher stand to hold an herb and vegetable garden.
3. Hang a porch swing to relax and catch a breeze on the patio.
4. Find a kitchen table for our new space that could also be a desk and work space for me and Ryno.
5. Make some delicious Indian food with lots of lovely spices.

blue skies

It's absolutely gorgeous today, and while I don't generally mind a beautiful blue sky day I really hope it rains. I can't remember the last time it rained in Austin, and we are in a drought so rain would be fantastic. Supposedly, there is a chance of rain this afternoon/tonight, but right now blue skies.

So while it looks like this....

lightbox

Lightbox launched last week, and I am loving it! Essentially, it is the same thing as Instagram, but for android phones. It does have a cool feature of linking your social networking sites to your phone camera so that you can automatically share your photos with friends and so that friends' photos will also pop up on your phone. I haven't actually gotten to that part yet, but I am still quite thrilled with it.

Here is one of my Lightbox photos of Ryno at Taco Selene on Friday. We had a group date night at some Eastside food trucks then bar hopped a bit. It was fun to see more of East Austin. I feel like I always go to the same places when we go, but there are so many great places to try.

honeypie

Happy Friday! I wrote down a bunch of songs that are new to me to share this week, but decided that I would rather go with a band I've loved for some time, The Weepies. Every-time they pop on my playlist at work I feel like I'm back in college listening to music on a Sunday morning. Their songs are so sweet and much to my delight so are their music videos. We all know I I'm a sucker for a good music video! I love this video in particular because everyone is dancing, how perfect! Hope you enjoy this music pick, and if you aren't familiar with their music I definitely recommend checking out more of their music here.

Also, it's worth a trip to their site just to read their About page. It tells their story; how they met, married and formed The Weepies. It's a great story!

Austen

Source

It's been a busy work week, but truthfully I have been absent here because I was engrossed in a Jane Austen novel. I started reading Northanger Abbey last week, and I haven't put it down since. I discovered that I could download all of Jane Austen's novels for free on my Kindle, and it was too good to resist. Until now I have only read (and reread) Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Sense & Sensibility. I decided it was time I read her other works; tonight I finished Northanger Abbey! Next I think I will start Mansfield Park or Persuasion.

The photo below shows the filming of Persuasion.

playtime

We had a great weekend enjoying time with friends and just being home. Saturday we spent the day eating and playing games in our friends' backyard. Elton was also able to come play with his dog friends. They splashed in the pool together and chased each other around the yard. Once the food came off the grill all the dogs begged in unison with their tails wagging. It was pretty much adorable!

When we returned home on Saturday we found a little surprise in our mailbox. Our good friends that visited us a few weeks ago from Dallas had sent us this sweet Boston Terrier print, "Obey the Boston Terrier." How cute is that! It was such a great surprise! Hope you all are enjoying a great start to your week!

Part 2

Also, as I am on a video kick I thought I would ask if you have seen the Empire magazine article/video covering the cast of Harry Potter. In the video the actors are asked to sum up the entire experience in a single word. It's pretty fantastic! Enjoy it here.

just get dancey

It's Friday! I'm so excited to be home from work early and able to spend some real time here. I thought about my music video choice all day. I was listening to the She & Him Pandora station at work, and I had some really solid ideas for subdued lovely songs to share with everyone. I even heard a great Maria Taylor song, which I found super exciting. I didn't realize she has her own project separate from Azure Ray. Then on my drive home I was flipping through the radio stations when Pink's Raise Your Glass started to play, and I couldn't help but laugh. I admit I don't generally follow Pink, but Raise Your Glass was on Glee so I know it. Yes, I love Glee. Now the reason I laughed is because one day Ryno and I were in the car when the song came on, and I started singing along. This caused Ryno to give me a head turn and side glance, which really only encourages me. So I waited for the perfect line, which of course is "don't be fancy, just get dancey," and I laid it on thick. Now whenever I hear it I laugh, however, I also turn it up. So here it is for you all to enjoy and kick off your weekend!

Be aware there is explicit content in the video, primarily language.

agua fresca

My new addiction is watermelon agua fresca. Well it isn't exactly a new thing for me, but ever since the temperatures have been reaching the 100s on a daily basis it is my go to drink. It's super refreshing and delicious, so I plan to start making it myself. I will let you know if I have any success with it. In theory it should be fairly simple....in theory!

weekend ease

It's late, but I didn't want to miss out on leaving a little note before the weekend. May was a busy month for us, so this weekend is all about relaxing and enjoying the warm June weather. I have big plans of gardening and exploring some this weekend. I'd like to go to the farmer's market and visit an antique mall I've heard good things about. However, it all depends on how much time I dedicate to sleeping in and being lazy. I hear rumor of rain on Sunday, which would be perfect. I love rainy Sundays! I'm also thinking a mimosa may just be the way to kick the weekend off. Have a great weekend!
