puppy love

How adorable is this puppy? He was in the sweetest wedding I came across on Snippet & Ink. I have always wanted a french bulldog friend for Elton. I think they would be adorable together.

Club Monaco

Have you seen Club Monaco's Fall 2011 Lookbook? I started shopping at Club Monaco while I was in school in Atlanta. I have always loved the effortless look of their pieces complimented by the perfect feminine details. This season is inspired by the lifestyle of the 50's beatnik movement. Here are a few of my favorite pieces...once again I coupled the outfits together for me and Ryno. I feel since this is the second time I have done this outfit pairing with lookbook photos (and probably not the last) it is a good time to point out I don't actually do this when we go out. I promise.

Dallas Trip

We are breaking all sorts of records here in Texas. First we broke the longest running streak of days over 100 degrees; the record was 69 days until now. Then this weekend we had the hottest day of the year at 112 degrees, which actually ties the hottest day ever in Austin. Also, the Humane Society lost power and it may not return until Tuesday. If you know anyone in Austin wanting to adopt a pet, they are doing free adoptions during this power outage.

That being said Ryno and I decided it would be wisest to stay at home most of the weekend. Although, we did beat the heat with a movie one day. We saw Crazy, Stupid, Love. It was a fun date movie and had an excellent cast. Since we don't have much to tell from this weekend, I thought I would finally share our Dallas photos from last weekend. We had such a fun weekend with our friends Sara & Taylor and hope to see them in Austin soon!

Isn't it awesome how the sharks are so close? We were sitting in a tunnel that the sharks could swim over, so they were circulating around us.

The last three photos are from the rest of the day before and after the aquarium. We started the day with an open-air art market and ended it with dinner at Common Table. Also, we made a little pit-stop at Bottle Shop to pick up a growler of Live Oak Hefeweizen. It was a great weekend getaway with good friends!

Bottletree

I have been wanting to share this artist with you for awhile now, but I was hoping with the release of his fourth album, Between Us, he would also make an official music video. I haven't been able to find any for his stuff, so I thought I would share this one that was recorded behind the Bottletree in Birmingham, Al. Ryno and I absolutely love the Bottletree. It was our favorite venue in Alabama by far, and we saw a lot of great shows there. For those of you that also love the Bottletree and still live near it you can catch Peter Bradley Adams' show there Tonight! Pretty exciting, right?

I hope you enjoy it, and if you do I recommend checking out his song The Longer I Run. It's my favorite, but again there wasn't a great video for it. We are off to a beer tasting and then I hope to do a little swimming this weekend. It is going to be 109 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday...crazy. Have a great weekend!

Skittle sweetness

While we were in Dallas this past weekend, our friends took us to The Common Table. Sara recommended their Skittle Sangria, which was fantastic. They drop Skittles in the bottom of the glass and as you drink it the Skittles begin to dissolve. It makes the Sangria fruity, sweet...delicious.

I have more photos from the trip. I actually brought our real camera in an effort to take better photos than what I get on my phone. I should have those to share soon.

bike riding

I realized today I completely missed my Friday music post. We started our weekend early and left for a weekend trip to Dallas. I have some great photos to share from our trip, so I will share those tomorrow.
Until then here is a photo from our bike ride the other night.

for the love of avocado

I may never have mentioned this before, but if you know me well one of my dreams is to own an avocado tree. Ever since I was a kid attempting to grow an avocado over a glass of water, I have believed if only I lived in a warm climate it would be feasible. So with weeks of highs in the low 100s I decided this is my chance. Ryno and I saved two avocado pits from our dinners last week, and today I searched Google for the best method. It seems most people prefer to suspend the avocado pit  in water with toothpicks. However, I also came across a tutorial suggesting you wrap the pit in a paper towel, moisten it, place it in a plastic bag and leave it in the sun. Since we have two pits, I am trying both methods. I will let you know if one seems better than the other, but my overall impression is this is a slow process. I'm very excited though to see if it works! How wonderful would it be to pick your own avocados from your yard!

If you want to try growing your own plant too, I found it was surprisingly easy to press the toothpicks into the avocado. I only had three toothpicks and was worried they would break, but it was pretty effortless. Also, I opted to use a crystal glass from a set Ryno's mom sent us. Isn't it lovely? I thought it would be much nicer to look at than a jam jar for the next few weeks. I will have to switch it once the root starts to grow, but for now it's perfect.

the band

As I was catching up on blogs this weekend, I came across a post on The Beat My Heart Skipped about BHLDN. They have included a timeline with the history of the wedding band on their site, and I found it really interesting. I thought I would share some of the parts I liked best.

The gold standard: Medieval Europe predominantly gave gold bands and often with gemstones in them...
sapphires: for the sky and eternity
diamonds: for a love that's indestructible
rubies: for love

In 17th CenturyEngland and France "posy rings" made of silver became the height of wedding band fashion. The word "posy" refers to the love poem inscribed inside the band.

photo & text via BHLDN

I found a few examples of the poems found on posy rings. A few of my favorites were...

dear love of mine my heart is thine
hope is the life of love - British Museum 16th or 17th century
forget me not - National Museum of Ireland

You can find the entire wedding band timeline here. Also, the article on posy rings is here.

If you are looking for wedding inspiration BHLDN is a great place to check out. Also, if you are in Texas they are about to open their first shop in Houston on August 18th!

kitchen explorations

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Ryno and I did end up road-tripping, but only as far North as Round Rock, TX. I'm not sure it can even be considered a road trip, since it is often grouped with Austin. We had a fun time doing some shopping up there. However, on our next trip I would like to make it to the downtown main street. It looks so quaint from photos!

We also spent some time cooking in our kitchen, which was fun. I attempted to perfect the fried egg sandwich. Ryno liked the combination I put together. We toasted potato bread, spread on a creamy swiss cheese, added fresh tomatoes, hot sause and then our fried eggs. It was delicious and seemed summery with the vine ripe tomatoes. I found a great technique guide for the fried egg here. Perhaps the most exciting part was finally using my cast-iron skillet! Until this weekend, I have feared ruining it somehow...I know that sounds ridiculous as it is iron. Nevertheless it sounded like something I am capable of doing by accident.

Since I didn't think to take a photo of our fried egg sandwich here is another one instead.

The Great Book of John

While I usually save music posts for Fridays, I just had to share the exciting news today! Some of our friends from Alabama recently signed onto a record label. The band is The Great Book of John, and we have long loved their music. When we still lived in Alabama, we would drive down to Birmingham to watch their shows. Ryno and I even got to attend their debut album release, Yves' Blues, show at The Bottle Tree.  So it is very exciting that they are releasing an album on the Communicating Vessels label August 16th, and I wanted to share their music video with you. If you enjoy what you hear you can visit Communicating Vessels' site, they are offering a free download of Never Tear Us Apart. Also, they will be touring the Southeast if you want to check out a show their schedule is here.

weekend plans

The weekend is here! I think Ryno and I may do a little bike riding, movie watching and hopefully day tripping. I have been really craving a mini adventure lately. I want to see somewhere completely new, since we haven't seen a lot outside of Austin it should be pretty easy to do.

In the spirit of a beautiful bike ride check out these lovely wooden handle bars by Officine Firenze Milani. I spotted an article about them here and just had to see more, which brought me to their official site here.

And now for the Friday music pick... I mean how could I not share something from The Decemberists. Their show was amazing!

The Decemberists

Last night we went to a taping of the Decemberists and Gillian Welch downtown. The Decemberists put on a really great live performance. They requested a lot of audience participation, which made it so fun! Hopefully, I can share some photos later. I wasn't able to take any during the taping, but I can share the ones we took before and after.

hot child in the city

We had such a relaxing weekend, which has oddly become the norm for us. I am accustomed to summer being a busy time with all the vacation travel that seems synonymous with summer. However, this year we have our vacations planned for the fall, so we find ourselves spending time at home. It's kind of amazing.

Since there was a city-wide heat advisory Saturday and Sunday, we primarily stayed indoors. Although, E did get his dog park day. He was pretty much over it after half an hour though. He does this funny thing when he gets hot; it's like he forgets how to drink water properly. Instead he thrusts his entire head into the water bowl, mouth wide open. We aren't sure he even gets any water this way, but it seems to be his preferred method.

Other than the park our big highlight to our weekend was pancakes. Not any pancakes, but Kerbey Lane Raspberry special pancakes! They were scrumptious.

It's funny, all weekend I kept singing Hot Child in the City by Nick Gilder. The heat advisory kept making me think of that Sex in the City episode called Hot Child in the City. Do you remember it? It's a favorite of mine.

daughter

Do you remember this song, Daughter, from the movie Knocked Up? Every time I hear it I can still remember the end credits rolling to this song, and how much I absolutely fell in love with it. I love to hear father's talk about their relationships with their children. I feel so fortunate to have great relationships with my parents, and this song reminds me of growing up with my dad teaching my sister and I to swim. It may be a fairly literal way to apply the song to my childhood, but that's the imagery it provokes.

Also, did you realize Loudon Wainwright III has been in some really good movies, including Knocked Up? I didn't until I checked out his site. You can watch his video real here.

I hope you all have a great weekend! We are going to try to beat the heat warnings. Yes, it is that hot.

dates & anniversaries

Last night Ryno and I went on a mini date to our favorite pizza spot in town. It is sort of a go-to date spot for us, and I realized that we are less than a week away from our 7 year anniversary...dating anniversary that is. Ryno had just come back to school from summer break when we started dating, so the onset of a new school year always reminds me of our first fall as a couple. We spent some time reminiscing and laughing about those first few dates that all happened within the first week. I love these first photos that we have together. I wish we had more.

We are going riding on our new bikes tonight. Hopefully, I can get a photo to share. Have a great night!

Steven Alan Fall

Steven Alan's Fall 2011 Lookbook is out. I love the women's and men's looks. Here are a few I can see myself loving for the fall, and a few for Ryno. And yes, I may have grouped them to show how we could coordinate the outfits together.

new york marriage look book

New York Magazine has a look book of the first officially recognized gay marriages that took place on July 24th in New York. I thought I would share some of my favorite photos/couples from the article. You can read the interviews with the couples here they are pretty great! Lots of excitement and love!

home

Lately I have been collecting inspiration for what I would ideally like our home to look like. Just the other day I was thinking about hunting for some style quizzes online to help me narrow things down, and today I came across the HomeGoods StyleScope quiz by Deborah Needleman via How About Orange. My style was Earthy Modern, which was pretty spot on in the description.

Here are a few of my favorite images that I have collected on my Pinterest board titled home.
