pink hearts

source
I've always loved Valentine's Day. When I was in grade school I loved it because we were given a block of time to work exclusively on decorating our Valentine's box/bag where our classmates would leave the Valentine notes. Then in high school and college, I would search for local events or other free activities that my single friends and I could attend on Valentine's. It was always fun to find obscure events/places that wouldn't be flooded with the Valentine's crowd. Now that it's me and Ryno, I enjoy decorating for us, and finding small ways to celebrate. Since the start of February is almost here and Valentine's Day is just around the corner, I thought I would share some Valentine's color inspired pieces.

be mine

This weekend Ryno and I grabbed pizza with friends at a new neighborhood spot they recommended. We saw lots of boston pups there, so we will definitely bring E along next time.

Also, while looking for Valentine's Day inspiration this weekend I came across this papel picado on Oh So Beautiful Paper. It was used as wedding decor in a Texas wedding. I love this form of paper arts; it makes for understated yet beautiful decoration. Hope you all had an inspiring weekend too!

elie saab 2012

Have you seen the new Elie Saab line? I love the bright hues, especially the canary yellow dresses...they remind me of the pop color in our wedding. Also, I love this amazing green T-shirt dress in the collection too!

thoughts for a special day

Ryno and I are going to celebrate our five year wedding anniversary this Spring. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but when I look at wedding inspiration I am always reminded of how much it has changed. I feel like couples are able to access inspiration so much more readily today versus five years ago. Fortunately for me, I have several lovely friends getting married this year or next, and I've been able to use their weddings as my excuse for still constantly looking at wedding inspiration. I promised to share some of my finds here, so these are a few of my favorites. Enjoy!

Ulyana Sergeenko

Have you seen the backstage photos of Ulyana Sergeenko's fashion show for 2012? They are really beautiful and dreamy. I love the prints in her line, and I think the photographs of her line are always just as beautiful as the line itself.

The Nest

Have you seen The Nest thermostat? Ryno and I pre-ordered one and it just arrived this week. It's the loveliest thermostat I've ever seen. We thought it would be a good investment for us to take with us when we move, and we like that we can control it from our phones. Also, it suggests settings to better conserve energy and learns your routine. The last three photos are of our Nest as we opened it and installed it.

2011 Music Recap

I was reading little glowing lights the other day when I came across a yearly music review she wrote. I thought it was a great idea, and I wanted to try it here since I spend so much time talking about music. Plus Ryno and I love to look back through old posts and reminisce, so I thought this would be a perfect way to record what music influenced us the most that year. Also, I secretly have a goal to compile a list of every show I've ever attended. It seems like a fairly lofty goal, but maybe this will encourage me to keep track of it better.

The Head & The Heart
source

A Seattle based band that a friend, whose husband is credited with recording their first album, told me I should check out. She was absolutely right that I would like their music, and their album The Head and The Heart has been a go-to for Ryno and me all year. I desperately wanted to see one of their shows when they were in Austin, but the only two shows they played were both the same weekend we returned to Alabama to move. I'm hoping they will return to Austin this year—fingers crossed!

Monsters of Folk
The band formed in 2004, but didn't release their album until 2009 due to their individual projects. I first saw them perform on Austin City Limits television show. The members are Jim James, Mike Mogis, Conor Oberst, M. Ward & Will Johnson.

The Decemberists
The Decemberists are an Indie Folk Rock band from Portland fronted by Colin Meloy. The other members are Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, John Moen & Nate Query. We were lucky enough to see them perform the last time they were in Austin. It was an amazing show with a lot of passion to entertain the audience.

Balmorhea
The most recent show we went to was Balmorhea at The Parish. While we bought tickets never having heard them before, we left really excited about their music and wanting to hear more. Technically, they belong to 2012's music review, but I didn't want to leave them off. Balmorhea is an Austin based band comprised of Rob Lowe, Michael Mueller, Aisha Burns, Travis Chapman, Kendall Clark & Dylan Rieck.

british fashion

I came across a post today by design is mine:isn't it lovely that featured the new line by Aubin & Wills, which is a British clothing line. It's my first time hearing about them, and I am completely smitten. The clothes are classically British and targeted to men and women in their mid twenties and thirties. Enjoy!

hello 30!

I had my 30th birthday this weekend, and it was my best birthday! Ryno planned a bowling party for me at The Highball. We met our friends there after having dinner at Home Slice Pizza. As luck would have it my college friend, Bev, was in town from Portland and she was able to spend my birthday with us too. We had so much fun bowling—even though I am terrible— and dancing to 80's dance music. The 80's dance party had coordinated music videos, which I loved!

ps- sorry if you checked the site and it was down this weekend...we ran into a little unplanned maintenance.

snow days

Have you seen the photos of Seattle's snow day from last Sunday? I heard people were skiing and snowboarding on the streets. The photos are really beautiful and definitely fun to check out.

I have a close friend visiting from Portland tomorrow, so I am keeping things short today. Have a great night!

SOPA

I was debating whether I should post about SOPA, since it isn't really within the realm of things I cover here. I did my small part and emailed my congressman earlier today. Then tonight I came across this video and thought it did a fair job of explaining the situation much more clearly than I could have managed. It inspired me to share the video to get the word out and possibly inspire others to speak out as well.

100 Best

Have you seen the list of 100 Best Beer Bars in the US? Ryno sent it to me yesterday. We were surprised to see a few of our old haunts in Alabama and Georgia made the list. I introduced Ryno to Brick Store in Atlanta when we first started dating, and it became a regular hang out of ours. Out of all the bars we have frequented throughout the years it is by far my favorite for food (their brunswick stew is delicious) and aesthetic. Although, skip the bathrooms if at all possible. Also on the list is The Stem & Stein, which was down the street from our house in Alabama. We used to go there for date nights, drinks and panini sandwiches.

Balmorhea

I hope you all had a nice long weekend! Ryno and I kicked the weekend off with a show at The Parish. We went to see Balmorhea, Peter & The Wolf and Botany. We absolutely loved Balmorhea! After the show, we grabbed a late dinner/early breakfast at Kerbey Lane on UT's campus. Since we were out past 2  am, most of Saturday was spent relaxing and hanging out with Elton. Sunday we checked out a newish dog park called the Cedar Bark Park. It is a really nice park with large areas for the dogs to run and play. The park also has a good sized pond where the dogs can swim. Elton found a few friends and really enjoyed sprinting the length of the park. It was a lot of fun to watch him play.

moonrise kingdom

Have you seen the new Wes Anderson movie trailer? Ryno and I came across the trailer last night, and I think it looks beautiful. Set in the 60's, a boy and girl fall in love and run away together. The town forms a search party to find them.

Ryno and I are planning to catch up with some friends at a show tonight. I'm looking forward to checking out a new place. My big goal for this year is to push ourselves to break away from the familiar and seek out places that are new to us. I will let you know what we find and how the show goes too. Have a great weekend!

living with less

Have you heard of the zero-waste home? I was reading some old re-nest articles over the weekend when I came across an on-going project inspired by a family in California that is attempting to live with less. You can check out the Johnson's blog here if you want to follow their process. I find what they have accomplished very inspiring, because while I hate having clutter, I am not great at parting with things. I try to limit what I bring into our home, but I think it is amazing that they have been able to entirely eliminate garbage from their home. Everything they use is either recycled, donated or composted.

While I think such a drastic adjustment to our current lifestyle may be overwhelming, I am hoping to follow a condensed version of the re-nest agenda to implement some change in our consumption habits.

Agenda from re-nest:
week 1: setting the agenda
week 2: closets, clothes and coats
week 3: closets, linens
week 4: office, books and magazines
week 5: office, files and documents
week 6: bathroom, medicine cabinets
week 7: kitchen, cooking utensils
week 8: kitchen, dining ware
week 9: kitchen, serving ware
week 10: cleaning supplies

source
I only have a week to dedicate to this project, so I am going to try to impact the areas of our home that require the most attention. My week will involve de-cluttering our kitchen, bathrooms, garage and closets. I will follow up after I finish in the beginning of February.

29

Ryno turned 29 today, so we are going out to celebrate. I wrapped a few small surprises and left them for him to find in the morning when he woke up. I also made use of some whiteboard magnets I received for Christmas (thanks Jess!) to leave him a birthday message this morning. Tonight we are grabbing pizza at his favorite spot with his brother. I'm looking forward to celebrating together! I love you Ryno, happy happy birthday!

st. augustine

While Ryno was home in November, he found some photos of his grandparents when they first started dating. They took a day trip to St. Augustine and took some sweet photos while they were there. I thought I would share a few of our favorites from the set. I especially love the one of them sitting in front of the soft leaf yucca bushes.

seeing spots

The weekend started out with big plans of accomplishing a lot around the house. We need to take down our Christmas tree for starters (eek!). However, it was our first weekend without any plans in awhile, so we decided to take it easy. Friday we met friends for pizza at a fun byob place on the Eastside. Then on Sunday we took Elton to see his friends at the dog park. We learned that the Boston Terrier group is now followed by a Great Dane dog group, which was thrilling for Elton. He has loved every Great Dane he has met since he was a puppy. It's always fun to watch them tower over him, but surprisingly he has a similar play style and it just seems to work. Without fail he found an adorable black and white Dane puppy that wanted to run and pounce around with him on Sunday. We also got to see his girlfriend, which is always fun for us to see them playing together.

I have some plans to hunt for wedding inspiration this week. So many friends have gotten engaged recently, and I am thrilled to help find some fun ideas for them to incorporate in their celebrations. If I come across anything good, I'll share it here too!
