Olympians

We're having a lot of fun watching the London Olympics in the evening. The gymnastics and men's swimming was so exciting. Did you catch Phelps win his 19th Olympic medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay with teammates Lochte, Berens and Dwyer?

summer roadtrip

Ryno and I just returned from our summer vacation to Dallas and the surrounding cities. We stayed in downtown Dallas with the intention of walking everywhere, however, the triple digits quickly changed our plans. Instead we spent a lot of time visiting museums and reserving outdoor activities for early mornings. The first night we caught a ball game in Arlington, the Rangers played the Red Sox and won. The next day we spent at the Fort Worth Zoo and art museums. After returning to Dallas we met our friends, Sara & Taylor, for dinner. Afterwards, they took us to the Deep Ellum Brewery for a beer tasting. Some of the other highlights were drinks with friends at Common Table...Skittle Sangria to be exact (a favorite ever since Sara introduced them to me on our last visit & Christy may be hooked now too!), Chihuly at the Arboretum and spending Saturday afternoon watching the 2012 Olympics. I also was able to play with StreamZoo a lot, and I'm really enjoying it. I thought I'd share some of the favorite photos we took on our trip.

just a minute in july

Making... a photo wall in our room from our wedding and anniversary shots. It's so fun to finally have them printed.

Watching... The Hour, just one of our many favorites from the BBC. I'm not sure what I would do without British television. Dr. Who & Downton Abbey anyone? ps- Violet Crawely played by Maggie Smith is my favorite... aka The Chicken Lady.

Listening... to Tom Petty's "Wildflowers
you belong with your love on your arm, you belong somewhere you feel free

Loving... that both of Ryno's brothers are in Austin and that we can all spend time together this summer.

Waiting... to see friends and enjoy some downtime with Ryno.

Wishing...  my parents lots of love today. I'm so happy today went well!

quote worthy

Source: Sharon D Pruitt
Have you ever been asked to select a quote you live your life by? Personally, I always struggle with this question, and I often want to say "carpe diem." It's the first phrase that comes to mind, but it isn't really a quote. While I was scouring inspirational quotes for one that seemed like something I would live my life by, I decided to grab some that I truly find inspiring and at least wish I lived my life by to share here. The first group I believe I do apply in my life, and the second group are quotes I wish I applied more. Do you have a quote that defines you?

  • "I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." — Pablo Picasso
  • "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." — Albert Einstein
  • "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things." — Robert Brault

  • " You make a living by what you earn; you make a life by what you give." — Winston Churchill
  • "You must be the change you want to see in the world." M.K. Gandhi
  • "There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them." —Dr. Denis Waitley

call me maybe

It's Friday! I'm so excited Friday is here, because I've known all week what song I wanted to share. I'm completely obsessed with Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" at the moment. It totally takes me back to college and early post college summers when I would go dancing with my girls. We always had one song we would request over and over and "Call Me Maybe" would definitely be our summer request if we were all still in the same town.

As for sharing a video, several different groups like the Abercrombie & Fitch models, the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders and the US Military all lip-synced to the song in their own versions of the video. However, my favorite by far is Jimmy Fallon and The Roots singing with Carly Rae Jepsen. The inclusion of a toy xylophone was pure brilliance. I hope you enjoy! Have a great weekend!

Carly Rae Jepsen - vocals, triangle•Jimmy Fallon - wood block, tambourine, bass drum•Questlove - washboard stick, kazoo, recorder•Tuba Gooding Jr. - kazoo, recorder•Frank Knuckles - bongos•Captain Kirk - ukulele•James Poyser - melodica•Mark Kelley - toy xylophone•Black Thought - tambourine

oh no no's

I love Parks and Recreation. Some of our friends got us hooked last year, and Ryno and I spent last fall catching up. My absolute favorite sketch so far is by Aziz Ansari, he is also a stand-up comedian and is hilarious. Aziz's stand-up is available on his site for $5; it makes for a laugh-filled evening. If you haven't watched the show, I really recommend it too. Hope you enjoy my favorite bit...oh no no.

it's a nice day for a white wedding

It's funny how sometimes small things line up in life, and while they have no true impact it may just bring a smile and chuckle to your day. Yesterday one of my dear friends asked for my opinion on whether she should hire a videographer for her wedding. We did not use a videographer and it wasn't until this past Sunday afternoon, when I was hanging photos (I finally printed and framed) from our wedding, that I actually had any second thoughts about that choice. The fact that she asked me the very next day made me laugh out loud. As I explained to her, my regret was fairly fleeting, and if Ryno and I were to renew our vows or something tomorrow I still wouldn't choose to have it recorded on video by a professional. However, I would consider having a friend film a small portion of the ceremony & vows. My intention is not to knock videographers, I have seen some amazing wedding videos. My favorite is here, by Elysium Productions. I think their Rock n' Roll same day edit videos are fantastic. My reasoning is that I personally enjoy remembering the day the way I experienced it. Did you use a videographer? Would you recommend others hire a videographer for their big day?

great scott!

"Great Scott! is an exclamation of surprise, amazement, or dismay."

As previously mentioned I absolutely adore anything that references the origins of a common expression or phrase, so I felt I had to include the wikipedia origins of Great Scott with this post.

I realized that I've probably never mentioned it before, but my sister spent almost two years living in Scotland while earning her masters from University of Glasgow. Luckily, my summer abroad aligned with the time she was living in Scotland and we were able to meet a couple of times in different cities that summer. We were also able to explore a little of Scotland and the countryside throughout Scotland was some of the most beautiful. My sis follows Frightened Rabbit closely, and she sent me this video last week. Apparently, footage from their tour is being turned into a documentary. The shots of the countryside are so beautiful, I wanted to share it here.

the turtle wins the race

Hi friends! I missed being around last week. The week felt really compacted. Our weekend was a combination of fun activities with friends and relaxing at home during some intense thunderstorms. Friday, we tried New India, an Indian restaurant offering Malvani & Gomantak curries, with some friends. Also, Ryno's littlest brother's girlfriend visited this weekend, so we had fun spending time with them!

Today has already been pretty exciting for little E. Ryno and his brother found a turtle in the road and brought it to our yard, so it wouldn't get runover. Elton found it wildly entertaining; the video is below (it's a fairly long video, so I included photos too). We ended up taking the turtle to a nearby lake, so it could stay cool and find friends.

tonight, tonight

The competition performances for "So You Think You Can Dance" start tonight, and I am excited to kickoff the summer dance season. I've been watching since the first season of the show, while the format has changed a few times over the years, I always find a dancer to get behind.

purple polar bears

I may not have mentioned it before, but I have been on a sugar fast since late April. Ryno thinks calling it a sugar fast sounds as though I am eating nothing but sugar, it is in fact the opposite. On the Fourth of July I ate a cookie, and Ryno and I had a brunch date during which we enjoyed pancakes. Otherwise, we've kept to the fast. All of this made visiting Quack's Bakery with friends that much more irresistible this weekend. How adorable are their animal cookies?

I ♥ books

...especially imaginary children's books.

I know I've come somewhat late to the party having only seen Moonrise Kingdom last weekend, but I was trying to decide on a music video to share today when I stumbled upon the video below. The video is an additional short Wes Anderson created from the fictional library books that belong to Suzy Bishop in the movie. The short doesn't contain any spoilers; it is purely excerpts from imaginary children stories that Wes Anderson wrote to be read in the film. I like that they are animated using stop-motion animation and that they commissioned artists all over the world to illustrate each story. Jeremy Dawson, the producer of the animated book short and Moonrise Kingdom, discusses the project in more detail here. I hope you enjoy them! Have a great weekend!

moonrise kingdom

Hope everyone had a happy Fourth of July! Ryno and I joined some friends for a grill out yesterday to celebrate. Elton was able to come along and had so much fun running around with the other cute pups.

Last weekend we took in a matinĂ©e of Moonrise Kingdom. Of course the colors were absolutely stunning. I especially loved the character, Suzy Bishop's, outfits & the animal masks.
