blake shelton

I try not to repeat artists too much on my Friday music posts, but I can't help it. I think this Blake Shelton song is so sweet, and I wanted to share it today. I hope you enjoy it!

happy turkey day!

I hope you're having a wonderful holiday and enjoying lots of tasty treats! I thought I'd share some fun dessert inspiration; I love the use of wood serving plates to make a Fall statement.

Happy Thanksgiving!

oh november!

Everyone talked about October flying by, but honestly I've completely lost hold of November. I can't believe Black Friday is next week! Ryno and I have been trying to put some good habits into practice, which I think is partially to blame for my absence. We're trying to have a set date night once a week...sometimes we even sneak in two! I've put together a date night jar with ideas of things we love doing together or things we've wanted to try. We're planning to test it out this week; I'll let you know if it works well. Also, we read it's good for you to shut off all screens at least an hour before bed to give your body time to adjust from the artificial light, so we're trying that out as well. I'm particularly enjoying that one so far. The last big thing is we finally had a housewarming in our new place. It was a lot of work that resulted in me cooking thirty baked potatoes, but we had so much fun! I read the suggestion once to have a loaded potato bar and allow friends to decide on their toppings. It worked really well, and allowed us to accommodate vegetarian/vegan friends, which is always my biggest concern when coming up with a menu for a party. It was great spending time with friends in our new space, and we hope to do so more often now that we're settled.

Avicii

I spent my morning listening to the Avicii Pandora station at work, and it's a really good station. The music is all upbeat, which is just what my morning needs. I thought I would share my favorite song of his, but the official music video is a lot of sponsored plugs. So I'm going to share the "lyric" music video instead of the song Wake Me Up.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Happy All Hallows Eve

I'm so excited to pass out candy at our new place! I'm hoping we have a good crowd tonight; seeing all the costumes is my absolute favorite part of Halloween. I've always counted Halloween as one of my favorite holidays. I wish Ryno and I dressed up for the kids, because I thought that was the best when I would trick-or-treat as a kid. Adults dressed up as witches and pirates made it feel like everyone was part of the magic. However, we're never on top of our game enough to have costumes. My mom suggested we wear our beekeeping suits, which I thought was brilliant. However, I don't want to smell like smoke all night... maybe we'll be ready next year. Are you dressing up? Do you have a favorite costume or theme? I heard Hunger Games is the group costume this year.

ps- check out these vintage Halloween photos from Greenwich Village parties.

TX Book Festival

This weekend Ryno and I went with my family to the Texas Book Festival. Somehow it's the one thing we've managed to do every year. I really enjoyed this year though, because Penguin Books was promoting their brand with an exciting new book trailer. It's orange and has cute penguins all over it! I bought a couple of books and scored an adorable Penguin tote!

We also checked on the bees to see what progress they've made in the past few weeks. Ryno showed me a few of the screens that were entirely full of capped honey — the white section on the screen he's holding up is all capped honey. It's so exciting to see them thriving!

anna kendrick

Today's song came from the film Pitch Perfect, which I thought was a fun film. However, my favorite thing to come out of the film is definitely this song. It plays on the radio in Austin, usually in the early mornings, and it absolutely brightens my day. I can't exactly put my finger on what I love about this song. I'm sure some of it is that I think Anna Kendrick is very witty, extremely bright and the best guest judge to appear on So You Think You Can Dance. However, I also just love the simple lyrics and cup playing. I hope you enjoy it too.

Have a wonderful weekend!

small wins

My day started with the KISS FM radio dj's discussing "small wins." The point they made was to look for the "small wins" in your day to have a greater appreciation for the good in the everyday. I decided it was just what my day was going to need, so I played the game all day. Here are a few of my wins for the day.
  • a friend sent me a sweet note
  • it's a gorgeous day... and driving with the windows down
  • Anna Kendrick's "When I'm Gone" played during my drive
  • the market had a beautiful flower selection, so I bought white flowers as an homage to summer
  • our freshly cut lawn makes me smile especially when Elton sleeps in it
What were your small wins today? I had a lot of fun playing, so I may try this again next month!

couple

I spent a good amount of time on Pinterest this weekend. Ryno and I had anniversary shots done last year, and while we loved the results, I still manage to find tons of other images I would love to replicate. Here are a few of the favorites I've pinned recently.

farm fresh

Our weekend was fairly tame. The weather was gorgeous, so we opened up the windows and hung out at home. Ryno did squeeze in a bike ride while I stayed home for important things like TV marathons. On Sunday we checked out options for a local CSA. We spoke with a lady from Greengate Farms and decided their half bundle would probably be a good choice for us. It was fun to see all the variety at the farmers' market. Ryno pointed out the honey booth, and I was lured in by several cheese stands. Also, the park the market is held at is really beautiful. We're looking forward to our next trip.

blind pilot

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I wanted to share something from Blind Pilot, but then I got really excited about the Mackelmore song last week and it never happened. They have some videos of their music recorded while staying with a friend in New Orleans. I enjoy the casual setting combined with the lovely colors of New Orleans... orange wall, pink door across from a sea foam green house.. just beautiful. Hope you love it too! Have a great weekend!

domino

I was doing some quick run in and out grocery shopping on my way home today. I ended up in line behind an older gentleman that somehow quickly befriended me, which I loved. My mom always tells me these stories about how I would run off whenever we went to a store and immediately befriend the grandpa-type, elderly man sitting on a bench. She says she would find me talking his ear off. Anyhow, since I was waiting for him to be rung up, I decided to peruse the magazine rack. The funny thing about the health grocery stores is that they don't carry gossip magazines; I respect the choice but find it far less entertaining. As I'm glancing past covers of food culture magazines I spot Domino, and decide it must be a mistake. Domino, like many other magazines during the recession, was forced to stop producing the print version of the magazine due to the expense. When I reached for the magazine and saw that the headline read "We're back!" I almost let out a cry of delight. I quickly contained my excitement and carefully placed it among my groceries. So that is my plan for the afternoon. I will be gingerly flipping through every page of Domino, and pinning away on their website. If you're a fan too, you should check out their online magazine as they have added a feature that allows you to directly shop the feature articles in the magazine.

Texas State History Museum

Yesterday we attended First Sunday at the Texas State History Museum. It was the last day of the Ima Hogg furniture collection exhibit, which was really beautiful. My favorite part of the exhibit was a video they had playing on a loop of a man making a chair with tools from the late 1800's. Most of the tools he used were similar to the ones Ryno's brother got from a family friend.

macklemore & ryan lewis

The first time I heard the song Same Love by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert I got a little choked up. I assumed the song wouldn't manage to have the same effect twice, however, after seeing the video today I realized I was wrong. I think the song, which is about legalizing same-sex marriage, is absolutely beautiful. The video is equal to the music and tells such a lovely story. The cover artwork for the album features Macklemore's uncle and and his uncle's partner.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

ruby

A couple years ago Ryno and I went to see The Decemberists, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings record an ACL taping. It was a fantastic show. Sadly I had to be up so early the next day, earlier than my typically early days that we missed most of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings performances. However, the more covers I hear of Gillian Welch's "Look at Miss Ohio," the more I appreciate the beauty and simplicity of her songs. I'm currently obsessed with Blind Pilot's cover of the song, which you can find on their i-Tunes Session EP. I think I'll share one of Blind Pilot's videos next week, but this week I want to share a sweet Tiny Desk Concert via NPR of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. How amazing is Rawlings' guitar work? Hope you enjoy! Have a great weekend everybody!

heart of the matter

Do you remember the end of Father of the Bride, the 90's version? Annie is packing up her room the night before her wedding as her parents head to bed. Then due to some wedding night jitters runs into George downstairs on their family basketball court. Annie tells him, "It was so strange packing up my room. You know how you have always trained me never to throw anything away. So like I have all these ratty stuffed animals and yearbooks...my old retainer...all my old magic tricks. And I actually packed it all. I just didn't want to let it go. I mean, I know I can't stay, but it's like I don't want to leave." Today while attempting to unpack some of the boxes we haven't opened since we moved to our new place a couple months ago this quote came to mind. I have so many ticket stubs, stuffed animals and childhood toys that I can't seem to throw away even though I will never need them again. I've read suggestions before about taking photos of sentimental objects and then throwing out whatever it is. While I think that sounds great in theory, I would still struggle to part with the physical object. It doesn't seem like a photo can really convey the texture, color and weight of something that's traveled with you from city to city. Do you have an approach that works for you when sorting through sentimental belongings? I did read this post by The Minimalists, which I found helpful. I'm definitely going to be taking the "baby step" approach.

celebrations

We celebrated my mom's birthday this weekend with dinner at Flour and Vine followed by ice cream at Lick. I was actually able to enjoy some vegan friendly ice cream; my flavor of choice was peanut butter, chocolate and coconut milk ice cream. It was surprisingly similar to what I remember real ice cream tasting like. On Sunday we all toured the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, which had been on our list of things to do in Austin. I didn't manage to take many photos there due to the sweltering heat. I believe the next time we visit the gardens will be during some cooler temperatures. Hope everyone had a great weekend & Happy Birthday Mom!

smitten

Since moving to Austin, Ryno and I have developed a serious love for Indian food. A couple of our friends took us to Clay Pit our first year here, and it was love at first bite. Last year I bought two Indian cookbooks, but was too overwhelmed by the spice list to ever make anything from them. However, this week we finally made a chana masala dish that we found on Smitten Kitchen, which is a food blog that my sister recommended to us. Deb, the author, of Smitten Kitchen does a great job of breaking down the difficult to find spices and also encourages you to not be so overwhelmed by the spice list. We were very excited to cook our first Indian dish at home, and I'm hoping it will happen with some regularity now.

Last night we did pop out to meet Ryno's brother for some modernized Indian dishes at Whip In. I had an Italian sandwich with a pepper chutney that was fantastic!

the great outdoors

One of my favorite categories to collect inspiration for on Pinterest is my garden board called "the great." It's so fun to find unique landscapes or plant varieties. I love images that utilize beautiful uses of color or interesting layouts of an exterior space. Here are a few of my favorites!

puppy love

We had a really relaxed weekend, which we completely enjoyed. It was the first weekend in awhile that we weren't following a tight schedule. Cyrus, Ryno's brother's dog, joined us for the weekend, much to Elton's delight. It's rare that they are able to play in a fenced off yard together, so they were having a ball. Elton kept trying to show Cyrus all the sticks he has in his yard, and there were quite a few playful bouts of puppy wrestling.

dance dance dance

I seriously considered not watching So You Think You Can Dance this season, because I really enjoyed Cyrus as a performer last season and thought it may be best to end on a good note. I'm so glad that friends convinced me to keep watching. One friend suggested that life would be less fun without Cat Deeley, and I must say how right she was! I have loved this season of SYTYCD. On last night's show Nigel revealed that Cat saved my favorite dancer of the season, Jasmine, from being cut from the top twenty. Just another piece of evidence that Cat pretty much makes the show! I can't wait to see which dancers win next week, but until then... Have you seen Twitch's proposal to Allison Holker? They are both past contestants of the show, and it was revealed last week that they are engaged. I wanted to find a write-up with some details, however, I found something even better. Their proposal video is online! It was an incredibly sweet proposal that seemed perfectly suited for them as a couple. Ryno and I were both always big fans of Twitch; he is one of the only dancers Ryno always enjoys watching on the show. Best wishes to both of them, and the proposal video is below for you to enjoy!

botanical

We had a lovely if not somewhat lazy, long weekend. The big highlights were attending the cactus and succulent show at the botanical gardens, introducing my family to the British Sci-fi comedies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost with a viewing of The World's End, and successfully conducting a hive inspection in one hundred degrees (that was all Ryno). We've been talking about the succulent and cactus show for the past three years, but never made it on our own. Since my parents were already going, we decided to tag along. It also allowed us to revisit the gardens, which we had only seen one other time (also in 100 degree temperatures). I think the lesson I learned last time we went to the gardens was "wear floppy hats." Next time I'll try to remember the best plan is to go when it's cooler. I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend too!

dawes

We went to see Dawes at the Moody Theater on Sunday, and I've been devouring their music all week. It's rare to come across a band that writes songs that are smart and easy to relate to. One of my favorite lines is from the song I'm sharing today called "A Little Bit of Everything," which is on their 2011 album Nothing is Wrong.

I think that love is so much easier than you realize. If you can give yourself to someone, then you should - "A Little Bit of Everything"

However, if you like this song definitely check out their new album Stories Don't End. While this video only features Taylor Goldsmith; the full band has a great sound.  The songs I find myself repeating on the newest album are "Someone Will," "Most People" and "Hey Lover." I hope you enjoy it, and I'll let you know when the taping we saw is up! Have a nice, long weekend.

more adventurous

We drove East this weekend to visit our friends that live near Houston. We are trying to be better about getting together more often, since we only live a few hours apart. I know Ryno and I would leave Austin more if the roads to Houston, Dallas and San Antonio were not all littered with road construction, by far the worst part of the trip. We had a perfectly laid back weekend, which is what we all agreed upon beforehand. Ryno and I brought some board games, one was a variation of Apples to Apples, and it was a ton of fun. I managed to take exactly three photos during the weekend. Next time I plan to take some shots of the dogs too. The weekend pretty much felt like a reunion weekend for the pups. Moomie and Elton played together non-stop, and they hardly noticed we were there except when we fed them or opened the door to the backyard. It was great to all get together, and we're looking forward to the next trip!

jason isbell

Ryno and I were able to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit along with Amanda Shires perform at The Moody Theater on Monday. It was a fantastic show with a lot of energy considering he sings slow, sad songs. My favorite song of the entire show was "Outfit," which he originally wrote while he was a member of Drive-By Truckers. The song is composed from advice his father gave to him; some sincere and others not so much. The line I enjoy the most is "Don't worry about losing your accent, a Southern man tells better jokes."

Have a great weekend!

blood and champagne

I started following a tumblr feed awhile ago called Blood & Champagne, and it has become one of my favorite spots for inspiration, especially for the new place. The interiors that he shares have the perfect combination of vintage spaces paired with masculine elements. Hope you enjoy!
