dawes

We went to see Dawes at the Moody Theater on Sunday, and I've been devouring their music all week. It's rare to come across a band that writes songs that are smart and easy to relate to. One of my favorite lines is from the song I'm sharing today called "A Little Bit of Everything," which is on their 2011 album Nothing is Wrong.

I think that love is so much easier than you realize. If you can give yourself to someone, then you should - "A Little Bit of Everything"

However, if you like this song definitely check out their new album Stories Don't End. While this video only features Taylor Goldsmith; the full band has a great sound.  The songs I find myself repeating on the newest album are "Someone Will," "Most People" and "Hey Lover." I hope you enjoy it, and I'll let you know when the taping we saw is up! Have a nice, long weekend.

more adventurous

We drove East this weekend to visit our friends that live near Houston. We are trying to be better about getting together more often, since we only live a few hours apart. I know Ryno and I would leave Austin more if the roads to Houston, Dallas and San Antonio were not all littered with road construction, by far the worst part of the trip. We had a perfectly laid back weekend, which is what we all agreed upon beforehand. Ryno and I brought some board games, one was a variation of Apples to Apples, and it was a ton of fun. I managed to take exactly three photos during the weekend. Next time I plan to take some shots of the dogs too. The weekend pretty much felt like a reunion weekend for the pups. Moomie and Elton played together non-stop, and they hardly noticed we were there except when we fed them or opened the door to the backyard. It was great to all get together, and we're looking forward to the next trip!

jason isbell

Ryno and I were able to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit along with Amanda Shires perform at The Moody Theater on Monday. It was a fantastic show with a lot of energy considering he sings slow, sad songs. My favorite song of the entire show was "Outfit," which he originally wrote while he was a member of Drive-By Truckers. The song is composed from advice his father gave to him; some sincere and others not so much. The line I enjoy the most is "Don't worry about losing your accent, a Southern man tells better jokes."

Have a great weekend!

blood and champagne

I started following a tumblr feed awhile ago called Blood & Champagne, and it has become one of my favorite spots for inspiration, especially for the new place. The interiors that he shares have the perfect combination of vintage spaces paired with masculine elements. Hope you enjoy!

atx

We had what our friend, Brad, referred to as an "authentic Austin weekend." We've been so busy with moving and unpacking that we haven't taken great advantage of summer, so this weekend we finally went swimming. Ryno shared this article with me from the Austin Post, and when we woke up on Saturday we decided we should make use of the high temperatures and go swimming. At first we thought we would check out a pool we've never visited, however, we changed plans and decided to revisit Barton Springs Pool. I absolutely love Barton Springs, because it's an amazing spot for people watching. On this particular trip we saw two serious characters. One woman was wearing a thong swimming suit and another gentleman was wearing what wikipedia refers to as swimming briefs, however, that would certainly be a generous description. From there we left for lunch at Torchy's Tacos. Then, Sunday night we were invited to an impromptu potluck dinner with friends. We made this recipe, which was a hit and very straightforward. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend as well!

queen bee

Have you heard of Lorde? Her song "Royals" has been playing quite a bit on the radio here. However, it wasn't until this week that I learned she is only sixteen and is preparing to release her first album this September. The description she wrote for her music video allowed me to appreciate the video more. She explains she was trying to show how it feels to be sixteen, and chose to use her two friends in the video as well as places they frequent to make it feel very honest. She wanted to convey the listlessness and even boredom you can have in your teens. She says, "half the time we aren't doing anything cooler than playing with lighters."

Hope you enjoy the video and have a great weekend!

road test

My favorite article in any Real Simple magazine is called "Road Tests." The column selects a product such as sunscreen, hummus or water bottles and tests them with a user group. Then the top performers are divided into "best of" categories. I really enjoy the brief, informative descriptions. I spent a good portion of the afternoon going through the "Road Tests" available through the Real Simple website. My favorites are below.

phew

This weekend we visited with friends, hosted a beehive inspection and celebrated my Dad's birthday here in Texas. The bees are doing really great, and Ryno added a honey super to his hive a couple weeks ago. They already outgrew the second brood box he added earlier this summer.

Then for Dad's birthday we checked out the newly opened Lakeline Alamo Drafthouse, which was very big and shiny. We saw The Wolverine, which was alright. I have higher hopes for the new X-men movie, Days of Future Past... pretty much because of Peter Dinklage. Needless to say things have been fairly busy for us, and even little Elton has shown some signs of exhaustion. Check out the new napping position he developed today. Yes, that is my foot he is snuggling.

paracosm

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. I had some technical issues with an odd error message that seems to have resolved itself. Anyway, it's been a very busy week. My parents moved to Austin! It was really exciting to come home from work this week and have them pop over to our place to hang out. Considering they've been in Virginia for the past nine years it's never been a possibility for them to just "pop over" to see us.

We're having a belated birthday celebration for my dad tomorrow, and we are hoping to catch up with some friends this weekend. Otherwise, the plan for Ryno and I will just be soaking in summer. It seems that August always sneaks up on us, and I never feel like we have taken full advantage of the summer. Last summer we didn't make it to the pool until August. Sadly, the same is true again this summer, so checking out a local pool is on my list for the weekend. Of course, our kick off to summer seems to be perfectly timed with the release of the new Washed Out album, Paracosm. Ernest Greene's description of the album he set out to create sounds like ideal summer music to me. He told Sub Pop Records that he "just imagined being outside, surrounded by a beautiful environment. The video definitely offers the beautiful environment partnered with his song "Don't Give Up." I hope you enjoy it, and if you do the album is available for pre-release at Sub Pop.

ps- I added a pic of the cover, because it's lovely!
