our anniversary

Ryno and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary this weekend. We spent the weekend in Austin visiting some of our favorite spots. We thought it would be fitting to see The 5-Year Engagement, starring Emily Blunt & Jason Segel, since Jason Segel was filming Forgetting Sarah Marshall at Turtle Bay Resort while we were there on our honeymoon. Before the movie we exchanged our anniversary gifts, I bought Ryno a growler and he bought me cowboy boots! We decided on dinner at Vespaio on S. Congress. The wait allowed us time to run past Stag to pick up cuff links I found for Ryno. We did some further exploring through the other shops and the candy store, Big Top. I'll have more anniversary details later this week, and I hope to finally share the photos from Tiffany's wedding!

Hope you all had a great weekend!

be happy

The other day Ryno sent me a lifehacker article that I found interesting and inspiring. The article shares a story of how a nurse, Bronnie Ware, working with dying patients cataloged their regrets to share with others, and how two bloggers/designers, Paul Graham & Alice Lee, each found a way to present the list of regrets into a list of life commands. The result was a desktop wallpaper created by Alice Lee to be used as a reminder to apply the list in our daily lives. I thought it was worth sharing, and I pinned the image as a reminder for myself. I know the two commands I can definitely work on are "say what you think" and "don't ignore your dreams." Ryno and I were listening to a TED Talk last night that also touched on not ignoring dreams. The speaker asked everyone to think of what they would do if they knew they couldn't fail, and I thought it was an interesting idea that sometimes we forget the fear of failure can have a significant impact on our choices in life.

april showers

Everything that I have been working on since the start of the year is finally coming to an end. It's been a really exciting weekend for me. One of my dear friends from work married an absolutely stellar guy over the weekend, and Ryno and I were lucky enough to have a hand in their big day! We helped build their wedding decorations, and the rehearsal decorations too. The wedding was a morning wedding, so we were at the venue by 7 am to start installing the wood installation we created over the past couple weeks. I also acted as photographer during the ceremony, so I have a lot of photos to edit. I will share some here once I get through all of them. B + T had a really lovely ceremony, and the overall feeling of the wedding had a wonderful sense of community.

Also, the logo design I created for the THATCamp program my sister is leading was released on their website. You can check out their site and the write up about the logo here. It was fun working on a project for my sister. Overall, the project was fairly straightforward, but I appreciated her trusting me to handle the design interpretation.

I hope you had a great weekend, and I can't wait to come share some of the photos from the weekend. I will leave you with a few from a friends' baby shower we went to in San Antonio on Saturday. They are some of our college friends, so it was fun to all hang out if even for only a few hours.

ps- How cute are these cards and games? Our friend, Sara, printed out Baby Bingo cards that all the ladies filled in with gifts they guessed the mother-to-be would receive. Then we crossed off squares as she opened the presents until we got Bingo. It was so fun!

willie nelson

Ryno and I just returned from celebrating the Willie Nelson statue unveiling that took place on Willie Nelson Boulevard this afternoon in Austin. I was downtown working today, so Ryno rode his bike from his office to meet me. When I arrived some of Willie's entourage was hanging outside on the sidewalk in front of the ACL Live, where the statue was being removed from the crate. I walked around and shopped for a bit before grabbing a spot under a tree right in front of the podium. Then Ryno showed up, and we waited for Willie to arrive. When Willie's bus pulled up the crowd started cheering and snapping photos. The first speaker was from the Capital Area Statues, Inc, followed by the artist, Clete Shields. Shields made a nice quip that when he first met Willie, after he had already finished the statue, Willie said to Shields "I bet you're sick of me." Following Shields was actor, Chris Cristopherson and finally the mayor. Then Willie came up on stage, asked what time it was to which the crowd replied "4:20." He posed for a few photos with the statue before singing "On The Road Again" and "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die." It was a perfectly Austin event; the crowd didn't shy away from joining in the festivities and everyone sang along. The statue is really amazing, and I am so excited to have a Willie statue here in Austin! It's definitely something to see if you make a trip to the city.

mother's day

hello lucky
While we were out shopping Sunday I saw some card brands that were new to me. I thought it would be fun to share a few Mother's Day cards from those brands. Mother's Day is May 13th this year; are you ready?

gone country

Typically I try to avoid causing embarrassment with what I share here, but Ryno, being the good sport that he is, agreed to don a cowboy hat this weekend (for the photo), and I just have to share!

His aunt was in town visiting Austin for the first time this weekend, so Ryno, Rob & I showed her around. We hit up a lot of the "must-sees" with a mix of some of our favorite spots. The photo above was taken at Allen Boots on South Congress. We walked there from the shops on 2nd. I finally made it to Mercury Design Studio & STAG, both stores I have wanted to check out for some time now. After shopping we drove out to The Salt Lick for barbecue, followed by a wine tasting at Duchman Family Winery. We also visited The Texas State Capitol and a couple of the lakes. It was a lot of fun having her in Austin, and it's always nice to have an excuse to get out and explore!

most of all

We have Ryno's aunt visiting from Florida this weekend. We are hoping to show her a lot of Austin, since it's her first time here. I'll be back next week to share, until then I thought I would kick off the weekend with The Black Keys. Their song Tighten Up is the theme song for the HBO show, Hung. I love their sound, and I was amazed when I found out the entire band was composed of only two people, the drummer and the guitarist. I hope you enjoy it and have a great weekend!

suit up

It's that time, swimsuit season is upon us. I had hoped to get in a few more walks or a bit more biking before donning my swimsuit this year, but procrastination won this time. Still all of the cute suits this year will make a girl forget her lack of toning. I thought I would share a few of my favorites.

why hello old friend

So I mentioned the other day, I'm back to using Lightbox. I hadn't opened the app since October, so it was exciting to see some of the new features and updated filters. Also, to come across some of my old photos. Quite a few of our garden project, which was sadly a total flop. I'm working on building up the enthusiasm to try it again. One of our pepper plants must have dropped seeds, because it came back this year. I am taking it as a sign of encouragement from mother nature. I'll let you know how that goes. For now, I thought I would share some of my recent photos (butterflies) and photos from last year (garden).

the bride and the dress

Also, how gorgeous is my friend, Ashley? She had such a lovely crocheted lace dress from BHLDN and she made her birdcage veil! She is so talented! Congratulations Ashley & Ryan; we are so happy for you!

easter and a wedding

I hope you all had a Happy Easter! Unfortunately it was a short-lived affair with Instagram as they were sold to Facebook for a billion dollars today. Congrats to the folks at Instagram, but as for me I will be heading back to Lightbox. So here is the first and last of my Instagram photos to share from Easter and a couple days prior. We spent Easter on our porch hanging out with friends, throwing cascarones (eggs filled with confetti), and feeding Elton the Easter Bunny's carrots.

Also, I spent Saturday setting up my friend Ashley's wedding. My dad and Ryno came with me to The French Legation where they hung lights while I set the dining table & room decor. I also made some extra decorative ball jars to add in the mix. The jars I made are the milky pink and gold jars. I added some of the candle lights to them, so they would have a soft glow. The room was very intimate and it looked lovely covered in lights and flowers. Also, aren't the felt garlands Ashley made for their chairs adorable?

time is love

I was driving home earlier this week and heard for the first time Time is Love by Josh Turner. It reminded me of a conversation I had with my dad once. He told me a long time ago that people sometimes forget their time has value. He said that when you are considering doing a task it can be helpful to think about how much time that task would take you and decide if it is worth the value of your time. For example, I had a friend that could change the oil in her car on her own. However, that is something that I don't find very interesting, so I choose to pay a mechanic to change my car's oil. When I consider how long it would take me to do that task it ends up being worth the cost of paying a mechanic to do it for me. It's a basic example, but I still often use the logic when weighing decisions.

Thank you for spending some of your time with me. I love to hear what you enjoy and don't, so never shy away from saying hello. I hope everyone has a Happy Easter with friends and family. We will be spending Easter morning with my dad before he returns home.

palm door

Now that April arrived I am working to wrap up the projects I am creating for friends' weddings. Today, my friend T and I worked on building large chandeliers for her reception site. The wedding is going to be at the Palm Door in Austin. The space has an all white, exposed beam ceiling, so she wanted to add a darker wood tone within the installation. I thought I would share a few of our process shots, and I will add more photos once they are installed in the space.

twigs & honey

I happened upon the new Twigs & Honey 2012 line on The Wedding Chicks today. They have such lovely veils and headpieces. My veil was very simple and made from the material of my mother's veil.

From Twigs & Honey about their line:
We believe that the Twigs & Honey bride is equal parts elegance and whimsy and chose to create pieces to cater to her distinctive style needs.

I'm so excited! Instagram has finally arrived to the Android market, and I jumped right on it. I set up my profile, and I'm looking forward to taking photos first thing tomorrow. I will share some here soon. Hope everyone is having a great start to the week!

a river runs through it

March was a rainy month in Austin. All of the rain has helped fill up some of the streams and lakes in Austin. My dad arrived into town on Saturday and we all spent that evening relaxing at the house. Sunday, we drove around to a stream running through a nearby park and out to Lake Travis to see how much the rain had increased the water level. The difference between the lake level in December to now is very noticeable, but it is still 40 feet low. The stream was very full and when we arrived there were a few different families playing in the water. Unfortunately, we didn't have Elton with us or we would have let him swim a bit. It was a beautiful afternoon, and we had a lot of fun exploring the park paths.

ps- I used a river runs through it for the title, because the sunlight reflecting on the stream reminded me of some of the scenes in the movie. Also, below is my favorite quote from the movie/book.

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.”  - Norman Maclean
