Girls Guild

My friend, Sarah, sent me an Apartment Therapy article today. The article was a house guide for Cheyenne Weaver, a local Austin artist. Oddly enough another friend told me about another local artist, Maura Ambrose. What they have in common is they are both members (Cheyenne is also the founder) of Girls Guild, a new community that allows local lady artists to share their skills with the Austin community through classes. I immediately registered for their newsletter, and I can't wait to find ways I can become involved in the Girls Guild community. While I am designing, building and creating every day, it is always at my day job, which unfortunately means I don't have my own work to share. However, it is truly my goal to find a way in which I can still contribute and be involved with the amazing local artist community here in Austin. I definitely recommend checking out Girls Guild; they have some exciting upcoming classes and the artists' work is very inspiring.

you, me and mr. E

The other week I promised I would share more photos from our anniversary session once we had them. We've had a chance to look through them and share them with family, so I thought I would share a few favorites here. We loved all the photos! I honestly can't say enough good things about our photographer, Tara Welch. Thanks again Tara, you rock!

ps- A few are repeats from the other week, but they are still favorites that I didn't want to exclude.

our memorial day

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day. I was not ready to wake up for work this morning, but that may have had something to do with Mr. E waking me up at 4am with a yelp to signal deer or some other woodland creatures were in the vicinity. We had a great weekend, and it wasn't until today that I realized I didn't take a single photo of it. We played trivia and came the closest ever to actually winning, we saw the Father John Misty (previously the drummer of Fleet Foxes) show at The Mohawk, and we had a small gathering of family and a couple of friends for burgers at our place yesterday. It was our first anything at our place, so I insisted we buy an outdoor game of some sort. We settled on horseshoes, since it wasn't one we could easily make have to buy horseshoes either way. We also selected the "made in the USA" horseshoe set as it was Memorial Day after all, and we are trying to be more aware of US products. The only other decor for the lunch were pretty, pink peonies that I couldn't pass up at the market, they're my favorite!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
ps- I was finally able to organize my Pinterest a bit more and clear out my exciting.

Sarah Jaffe is an indie-rock musician from Denton, Texas. I thought I would welcome the weekend with a  song of hers called Clementine. I love the colors in the video and the swimming hole. I hope you all have a great weekend!

ACL 2012

My sister sent me the 2012 ACL line-up yesterday. It's such a great group of bands this year, and it truly spans all three days with bands I would love to see. Ryno and I went our first year here, we were out of town last year and now I'm wondering if we should seriously buy at least a one day pass for this year. The Civil Wars, The Avett Brothers, M. Ward, M83, The Shins, The Black Keys, The Foo Fighters, Tegan & Sarah and Alabama Shakes. So good, right?

I heart photography

I finally finished color editing the photos I took at our friends' wedding in April. They had such a beautiful wedding that was a true reflection of them as a couple. While I am most definitely not a wedding photographer, I think their excitement shines through. And I am excited to share a couple photos here.

Also, I'm so excited because our anniversary photo session images with Tara Welch arrived today. I can't wait to go through them and share some more here!

jackson 5

Ryno's family arrived today. We went straight to grab some Mexican food and introduced everyone to our favorite beverage, agua fresca. We are planning to get out on the water and visit a few of our favorite places. I thought I would sign off for the week with one of my favorite Jackson 5 songs, "I Want You Back." I hope you enjoy it, and I hope everyone has a Happy Mother's Day with their families!

I've started a new section on my Pinterest titled Idols. Typically, I try to avoid fascination with the very famous. However, I am certainly a sucker for a great quotation or biography, which you only ever find about people who have acquired fame of some kind. I can spend hours jumping between wikipedia pages reading peoples' life stories. In particular, I love discovering more about musicians and writers. I'm not sure why I find it all so interesting, but I love stories accounting the path someone traveled in life. I think that is partly why I have always kept my own diary and now this blog, which I use as an online diary of sorts. Anyway, I think part of what inspired me to start my Idols section is the movie, My Week with Marilyn. I thought Michelle Williams did such a wonderful job in that role, and it sparked an interest in Marilyn Monroe for me. Not to nerd out completely, but I've always loved black and white films, yet out of all the actresses I loved (Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Grace Kelly) I never really found Marilyn very relatable. I think that even as a kid my brunette hair and thin frame never found any likeness to Marilyn. It wasn't until I saw My Week with Marilyn that I felt she was someone I could relate to in some way. At least through their portrayal of her, she had a great desire to be successful in her career. She was very determined and a perfectionist in her work, which is something I can really understand: the desire to do something to the best level that one can do it. So today I thought I would share some Marilyn quotes.

Fame will go by and, so long, I've had you, fame. If it goes by, I've always known it was fickle. So at least it's something I experience, but that's not where I live.

I am invariably late for appointments - sometimes as much as two hours. I've tried to change my ways but the things that make me late are too strong, and too pleasing.
A sex symbol becomes a thing. I just hate to be a thing.

tom ford

Did you hear about Tom Ford's interview with Fern Mallis last night? I had no idea he grew up in Austin. I appreciate that he confidently wears a cowboy hat. Also, I love the way he discusses his journey through different facets of design. It's interesting how organic things were for him moving from Interior Architecture to a brief stint with acting and finally fashion design. Did you see his movie A Single Man? I think I'd like to watch it again; it feels appropriate for summer fashion.

where the wild thing are

My sister and I loved reading Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak before climbing into our bunk beds at night.

"The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved goodbye.”  - Maurice Sendak

cinco de mayo

Happy (belated) Cinco de Mayo! It was my first one in Texas, since last year I was in Vancouver for work. Ryno and I went to a fun backyard, surprise birthday party. How lucky to have your birthday fall on Cinco de Mayo, it's like St. Patrick's day; you know there will always be a good party whether you throw your own or not. Our friend, T, had adorable decorations that were very festive. Also, we finally got to see their fun!

happy anniversary!

As part of our 5 year anniversary celebration, we decided to have anniversary photos taken together. We agreed that since Austin is going to be our permanent home, photos in some of our favorite places in Austin would be a great way to have a lasting memory of our first few years here together. At first, I came up with a big presentation to sell Ryno on the idea, but he immediately loved the idea. The fact that he was as committed to the plan as I was made the entire experience really perfect.

Next, I set out to find a local photographer, which I thought would be a bit overwhelming. I have always loved photography, and I knew there would be some amazing photographers to choose from in Austin. However, as soon as I saw Tara Welch's work on Style Me Pretty, I was immediately taken with her photos. I jumped over to her website and went through each album in her archive; her work just seemed to fit our style so well. I contacted Tara and we arranged to meet on May 1st. We sent her a list of a few places we liked in Austin and agreed to meet at the Pfluger pedestrian bridge. It was so exciting how well everything fell into place!

Since I was the one really pushing for this idea, one would think I would be the most relaxed with the idea of having photos taken. However, I am terrible at it and always prefer to be the one photographing others, which is why there are usually way more photos of Ryno on this site than me. Tara was great about making us (mainly me) feel more at ease. She has such a natural approach that I very much appreciated. Tara never made us feel rushed, and she offered to go to other locations if we wanted. We suggested ending the day with tacos and agua fresca at El Chilito. Tara took some night shots there, that turned out really well. She was also nice enough to send me some photos early, so I could share them here! I will share more once we have the final shots in a few weeks. We absolutely love the sneak peek and can't wait to see the others! Thank you so much for everything Tara!

little talks

I am rather obsessed with the song Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men. They are an Icelandic band and they just released their album in the US at the beginning of April. I haven't heard the rest of the album, but  I would predict I am going to love it. I honestly can't get enough of their song Little Talks; it just immediately makes me smile. I hope it brings a smile to your face too; enjoy the weekend!

ps- I really enjoy the soaring, houseboat in the video.

for the love of mrs meyers

A few months ago a friend introduced me to Mrs. Meyers cleaning products. The first time I saw the clean, simple packaging of Mrs. Meyer's brand I instantly loved the aesthetic, but I was afraid the products would be too weak for tough cleaning. Cut to a couple months ago, my friend and I were discussing cleaning routines when she mentioned she used Mrs. Meyer's and encouraged me to try it. I went out and bought three hand soaps all in different scents. Ryno agreed that he really liked the clean scents, and we decided to buy some dish soap as well. The next item on my list is their dryer sheets. As I run out of a cleaner I am replacing them with Mrs. Meyer's.

Mrs. Meyers was developed by Thelma Meyer's daughter, Monica. She named her product after her mother, since it was her mother's garden that inspired her to develop a product that would smell as fresh as a garden. You can read all about their brand and products here. I've included the video with Thelma; I love when she says people should have a happy medium and not expect perfectionism in their home. It's so true!

One of my friends just got a new puppy. She sent over some pretty adorable photos that got me reminiscing on my little e....
